Is your child’s math homework getting you down? Trust me, you are not alone. Just when we lost hope that our daughter would ever learn her multiplication tables, she got a cute little gift that turned mundane multiplication table learning into a fun game. I am talking about the Girlz Connect Locket Pal by Bandai, the makers of Tamagotchi — and let me assure you that this is a far superior product to the Tamagotchi, with actual educational value.

This electronic toy is built to go — attaching to a backpack or belt loop with the built-in hook and chain. It has fun ‘girly’ activities like a mood sensor, crystal stickers to dress it up, and a variety of games that you play on the touch screen with a stylus. You can play tic-tac-toe, unlock secret codes (builds logical thinking skills), practice math, test your reading skills and improve spelling.

We are definitely impressed with the multiplication tables game — our daughter loves playing this one, and we found that this game has given her a definite confidence boost in her math skills. She no longer freezes up when you give her a math problem.

The toy is rated 5+, but probably more suitable for the 8 to 12 year old group, especially if they are to make use of the clock, alarm clock, calculator, phone book and calendar features.

Have you seen Hasbro’s Littlest Pet Shop? They are those itsy-bitsy animals with bobblin’ heads. They may be tiny, but they will soon take over your child’s heart! We love them because they offer lots of unscripted, open-ended play.

My guess is that the target market for these is girls, but in our experience, they appeal to boys as well, especially boys that like playing with character sets like Playmobil.

Each set normally comes with an animal (or more) and a little toy. You can also buy accessory play sets.

This is part of why they are so great for gift giving. One, once they start on their collection, the kids just can’t get enough of these critters. Two, each little toy one provides full play potential, and three, they truly fit all budgets.

A safety note — because of the bobblin’ heads and little accessories, they are appropriate for kids from older preschoolers (4+) through elementary school.

Whatever happened to Elmo and the gang? When my daughter we little, she loved Elmo, and there were lots of Elmo toys to be had. Fast forward ten years, and I’m going from store to store, searching for Elmo stuff appropriate for my soon to be 2 year old nephew. And guess what? The selection for that age group is pretty limited.

Luckily I found the “Surfin’ Elmo” Rocker by Little Tykes. Phew! Happy birthday little guy!
